The Proven Track Record of High/Scope
The High/Scope Approach is proven by years of long-term research. The project is called the Perry Preschool Project. Perry Preschool Project was created to study the effects of a Quality Child-initiated and directed Preschool program. The study followed 2 groups of children from poor neighbourhoods in Michigan. 1 Group attended a High/Scope program and the others attended no program at all. The results were astounding! By age 27, "one fifth as many Preschool program group members as non Preschool group members had been arrested five or more times (7% vs 35%) and only one third as many had ever been arrested (7% vs 25%)".
The Perry Preschool Project has become a testament to the High/Scope approach, and today children of all economic & social circumstances are benefiting from High/Scope. The research clearly shows that a child-initiated and directed program contributes to the development of a sense of personal and social responsibility.
The Ontario Early Years Study co-chaired by Dr. Fraser Mustard and the Hon. Margaret Norrie McCain in 1999 specifically mentions High/Scope as a high quality child care model.
Statistics Canada Says:
"By the time they get to kindergarten the children in childcare programs have better communication, learning and math skills regardless of family income. Thirty-nine percent of Canadian children aged 2 to 3, (about 192, 000 youngsters) attended some form of early childhood care and education. When they got to Kindergarten two years later, about 40% of them were judged by their teachers to be at the top of their class in communication and learning skills, compared with just a quarter who were not in those programs. In Grade 1 they were 1.4 times more likely to be rated high in math achievement. More of them were able to write a simple sentence, compare numbers and understand concepts such as "today" "summer" and "bed time".
