Why did the London YMCA choose the High/Scope Approach?
The Ontario Early Years Study is a report that was commissioned by the Ontario Government to study children from ages 0-6 and their families. The study was completed by Dr. Fraser Mustard and other Canadian researchers. The report examines a wide variety of programs and issues including child care and the impact of high quality child care.
The following are some recommendations brought forth by the Early Years Report.
- Early Childhood programs should be "play based, problem-solving environments offering children an array of opportunities to explore, discover and create". (Early Years report pg. 163).
- Positive adult-child interactions are crucial for brain development.
- Child care centres should be both parent and child-focused.
- Parents are a vital part of the equation and should be as involved as possible.
- Competent and qualified Early Childhood Educators are of vital importance to implementing programs that are meeting the needs of the young people in our care.
**The Ontario Early Years specifically mentions High/Scope as being a high quality child care approach as High/Scope is the only curriculum with proven long term research (Perry Preschool Project).
